Should You Get Your Actor or Model Portfolio Done in Your Own City or Travel to Delhi or Mumbai
If you live in Chandigarh, Dehradun, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jaipur, Lucknow, Jammu or another North Indian city, should you get your portfolio photographed locally or travel to Delhi or Mumbai? The answer depends less on distance and more on the photographer's specialisation, experience and the quality of the complete production.

Should You Get Your Actor or Model Portfolio Done in Your Own City or Travel to Delhi or Mumbai?
If you are an aspiring actor or model living outside Delhi or Mumbai, you have an obvious choice to make.
There may be photographers in your own city who can photograph you.
Or you could travel to a major city such as Delhi or Mumbai specifically for your portfolio.
At first, staying local seems like the obvious option. It is easier, cheaper to travel, and more convenient.
But a professional portfolio is not an ordinary photoshoot.
The better question is:
Should convenience decide where you create something that may become one of your most important professional assets?
Don't choose a city. Choose the right photographer.
The fact that a photographer is in Delhi or Mumbai does not automatically make them better.
And being in a smaller city does not automatically make a photographer unsuitable.
Specialisation matters more than the pin on the map.
An excellent portfolio photographer in your own city can be a better choice than an inexperienced photographer in Mumbai.
But if you cannot find someone locally whose work demonstrates serious experience specifically with actors, models and professional portfolios, travelling to a major creative centre can make considerable sense.
That is where the decision changes.
When staying in your own city makes sense
A local photographer may be perfectly suitable if:
they specialise in actor/model portfolios
their existing work is consistently strong
they understand posing and on-camera direction
they know how to plan looks
they work with good makeup and styling professionals
they can create genuine variety
their photographs represent real people naturally
you are confident that their work is comparable to what you are looking for
If all of that is true, there is no reason to travel simply because a photographer is located in Delhi or Mumbai.
When travelling to Delhi can be worth it
Travelling becomes more worthwhile when you are not satisfied with the specialist options available locally.
For someone in North India, Delhi NCR is particularly practical.
If you are based in:
Chandigarh
Mohali
Ludhiana
Amritsar
Dehradun
Haridwar
Jammu
Jaipur
Lucknow
Meerut
other parts of Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan or Jammu & Kashmir
you may find that travelling to Delhi NCR gives you access to a larger professional ecosystem.
But the reason to travel should be the quality and specialisation of the shoot, not simply the prestige of the city.
Your first portfolio deserves more thought than a convenient photoshoot
This is especially relevant if this is your first serious portfolio.
Your first portfolio is often going to become the visual material you use when introducing yourself professionally.
That makes the planning important.
A properly produced portfolio may involve:
photographer
stylist
professional portfolio makeup artist
studio
outdoor locations
multiple looks
posing and expression direction
image selection
professional retouching
The difference between a photographer who simply takes your photographs and one who knows how to build a portfolio can be substantial.
Delhi can be a particularly practical choice for North India
For someone living in North India, travelling to Mumbai is not automatically necessary just because you want to pursue acting or modelling.
Delhi NCR is already a major creative and commercial market, and it can be a practical destination for professionally produced portfolio photography.
You can travel for the shoot without having to relocate.
For someone coming from Chandigarh, Dehradun, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh or Jammu & Kashmir, a planned Delhi NCR shoot can therefore be a sensible middle ground:
local enough to be practical, but large enough to access specialised creative talent.
What about Mumbai?
Mumbai has an obvious connection with the Indian film industry.
But that does not mean every actor or model needs to travel to Mumbai to have their portfolio photographed.
If your immediate requirement is a strong professional portfolio, focus first on the photographer and the production.
The location of the photographer matters less than whether the resulting portfolio is genuinely good.
You should not spend extra money travelling to Mumbai merely because you believe a Mumbai address automatically makes a portfolio more professional.
Compare the complete production, not just the price
Suppose a photographer in your city quotes ₹X and a Delhi photographer quotes more.
The cheaper option may still be the better option—but only if the two shoots are genuinely comparable.
Ask what you are actually receiving.
Is there:
pre-shoot planning?
professional makeup?
styling?
multiple looks?
studio and outdoor photography?
proper direction?
experienced retouching?
creative planning?
professional image selection?
A portfolio should be compared on the quality of the finished work and the process behind it, not simply the package price.
A useful rule for people outside Delhi and Mumbai
If you are in a smaller city, I would use a simple test:
Stay local if you have found a genuine portfolio specialist whose work you trust.
Travel if the strongest photographer you have found is elsewhere.
That could mean Delhi.
It could mean Mumbai.
It could occasionally mean another city.
The objective is not to collect photographs in a famous city.
The objective is to create a portfolio that presents you at your professional best.
What should you look for before making the trip?
Before booking, study the photographer's actual portfolio work.
Don't judge only by:
follower count
studio appearance
camera equipment
number of photographs promised
celebrity photographs
price
claims such as "best photographer"
Look at the ordinary clients as well.
Do they look natural?
Does the photographer know how to direct inexperienced people?
Is there variety?
Do the photographs look like portfolios rather than generic portraits?
Does the photographer appear to understand actors and models?
These questions tell you much more.
The journey should be worth the result
If you are travelling several hours to another city, don't make the journey for a basic photoshoot.
Travel when the photographer's expertise, planning and production quality justify it.
That is particularly true for a first portfolio or a major portfolio rebuild.
A good portfolio can remain useful for a considerable period.
A mediocre one can leave you spending money again later to replace it.
For North Indian actors and models
Delhi NCR is particularly accessible to aspiring talent from across North India, and I regularly work with the portfolio requirements of actors and models rather than treating portfolio photography as just another type of portrait shoot.
My studio is in Indirapuram, Delhi NCR, and the shoots are planned around the individual—rather than simply putting every client through the same set of poses and photographs.
So if you are based in Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh or elsewhere in North India, you do not necessarily need to find a photographer five minutes from your home.
If the photographer you believe can create your strongest professional portfolio is in Delhi NCR, the journey may be worth making.
The decision is simple
Don't ask:
"Should I get my portfolio done in my own city?"
Ask:
"Who can create the strongest portfolio for me?"
If that person is in your city, stay local.
If that person is in Delhi, travel to Delhi.
If that person is in Mumbai, travel to Mumbai.
For something as important as your professional portfolio, the photographer should be chosen first and the travel plan second.
