Portfolio vs Digitals (Polaroids): What's the Difference?
Understand the difference between a professional portfolio and digitals (polaroids), when each is required, and why aspiring models often need both.

Portfolio vs Digitals (Polaroids): What's the Difference?
One of the most common questions aspiring models ask is whether they need a professional portfolio or just digitals (also known as polaroids). The answer is that they serve different purposes, and understanding the difference can save you both time and money.
What are digitals (polaroids)?
Digitals are simple, minimally styled photographs that show your natural appearance. They are usually taken with little or no makeup, simple clothing and minimal retouching. Their purpose is to help modelling agencies assess your natural features without the influence of styling or heavy editing.
What is a professional portfolio?
A portfolio is a carefully planned collection of professional photographs that showcases your versatility, expressions and ability to perform in front of the camera. It presents you in different looks, styles and moods, helping clients and casting professionals understand your potential.
Do digitals replace a portfolio?
No.
Digitals are not a replacement for a professional portfolio. They are an evaluation tool, whereas a portfolio is a marketing tool. Agencies may ask for digitals during the initial screening process, but a professional portfolio becomes increasingly important as you begin meeting clients, attending castings and building your career.
Should I get both?
For most aspiring models, the answer is yes. Digitals help agencies see the real you, while a portfolio demonstrates how well you perform in front of the camera. Together, they provide a complete and professional representation of your abilities.
Which should I get first?
The answer depends on your goals. If you're applying to modelling agencies for the first time, they may ask for digitals before investing in a portfolio. However, if you're actively looking for modelling assignments, acting opportunities or brand collaborations, a professionally planned portfolio is one of the best investments you can make in your career.
