How Often Should You Update Your Portfolio?
Wondering when it's time for a new portfolio? Learn how often actors and models should update their portfolio photographs and why keeping them current is essential.

How Often Should You Update Your Portfolio?
One of the questions I am frequently asked is whether a portfolio needs to be updated every year. The answer is simple:
Update your portfolio whenever it no longer represents who you are today.
Your portfolio is expected to reflect your current appearance. If a casting director or client meets someone who looks noticeably different from their photographs, it creates confusion and may affect your professional credibility.
Major changes require an update
Consider updating your portfolio if you have experienced significant changes such as:
A different hairstyle or hair colour
Noticeable weight gain or loss
Growing or shaving a beard
Cosmetic procedures
A significant change in age or appearance
A new direction in your career
The goal is not to keep taking photographs, but to ensure your portfolio remains an honest representation of you.
As your career grows, your portfolio should grow too
Your first portfolio may simply introduce you to the industry. As you gain experience, your photographs should also evolve.
Your portfolio should reflect the quality of work you are now capable of attracting. Better styling, stronger concepts and greater confidence in front of the camera all contribute to a more mature professional image.
Quality is more important than frequency
There is no benefit in replacing a portfolio every few months unless something has genuinely changed.
A carefully planned portfolio can remain relevant for several years if your appearance and career direction remain consistent.
Think of your portfolio as a living document
Your portfolio is not something you create once and forget. It should evolve with your career.
Every update should have a purpose—whether it is to reflect your current appearance, showcase your growth or position you for new opportunities. The objective is always the same: to ensure that anyone who sees your portfolio gets an accurate impression of who you are today.
