How Many Looks Should a Portfolio Have?
More looks don't always make a better portfolio. Learn how many looks are ideal and why quality, planning and variety matter more than quantity.

How Many Looks Should a Portfolio Have?
One of the first questions clients ask is, "How many looks do I need?" While there is no universal rule, I generally recommend seven to eight looks for a complete professional portfolio. In my experience, this provides enough variety to present you for a wide range of assignments without becoming repetitive.
What is a look?
A look is much more than simply changing clothes. It is a combination of wardrobe, hairstyle, makeup, accessories, background, lighting and overall styling. Every look should communicate a different personality, mood or character.
Why I recommend seven to eight looks
A well-designed portfolio should demonstrate versatility.
As a starting point, I like to include a balanced mix of styles such as:
Casual
Formal
Ethnic
Fashion or editorial
Glamour (appropriate to the individual and the market)
A strong studio or character-driven look
Swimsuit (female) or Bodyshot (Male)
Where appropriate, I also like to balance studio and outdoor photography, as each environment contributes something different to the final portfolio.
More isn't always better
Many beginners assume that twenty outfit changes will create a better portfolio. In reality, repeating similar photographs with different clothes adds very little value. Every look should introduce something new rather than simply increasing the number of images.
Every look should have a purpose
The number of looks is less important than the thought behind them. Each look should help answer a question for a casting director or client: Can I imagine this person in another campaign, another film, another character or another brand? When every look serves a distinct purpose, the portfolio becomes far more effective than one built around quantity alone.
